CrossFitter of the Month – August 2016

Hey Friends!

It’s (a little late), but it’s that time!  We get to highlight another of our awesome members!  For August, we’ve picked someone who’d dabbled in morning, evening, and afternoon hours, who is super friendly, and who shrugs off double unders like they’re nothing.

For Augusts CrossFitter of the month we’re excited to feature…

Emily!

Thanks for all the awesome energy you bring to the gym, and for always being a positive example for our other members 🙂

Name: Emily Lemieux

Age: 36

Occupation: Environmental Scientist at Amec Foster Wheeler

What was your exercise experience prior to crossfit?

I did a lot of competitive skipping growing up (all those years of double unders are paying off!), and have always been active outdoors. I did the typical gym/running bit starting in high school and continued that off and on until I lost interest five or six years ago. I developed a hot yoga addiction for a few years and followed that up with a bit of personal training and various bootcamp type classes before finally taking Brittney’s advice and hitting up an Intro session (thanks Brittney!!). I was hooked almost immediately after walking in the door.

How long have you been doing crossfit and why do you choose to crossfit?

I started Fundamentals in December 2015. I was looking for more of a challenge in my workouts, as well as an opportunity to work more on strength, and I get that from Crossfit every day. I love the programming and coaching, and I like that the workouts are scaled to suit the abilities and desired level of intensity of each individual.

What is your favourite part about crossfit?

Absolutely the people and the camaraderie at the gym; the feeling that I’m part of a team working towards a common goal, while at the same time an individual competing against only myself and working towards my own personal goals. Nothing makes my day more than a round of sweaty, chalk-covered high fives or props from someone as I leave the gym on an accomplishment I made that day. On days that I’m the last person struggling to finish a wod, the words of encouragement from everyone as I finish up always have me heading home feeling accomplished, despite what otherwise may have been a disappointing workout. I’ve been lucky to make it to a variety of classes with the evening, morning and lunch time crews, and everyone in the Crossfit fam makes me want to come back and share the communal struggle again the next day.

What are the accomplishments you are proud of? (Crossfit or non crossfit related)

Lately I’m pretty pumped that I’ve nailed my pistols. There are so many things I’d like to work on and improve, the list gets more than a little intimidating if I consider them all at once. I was over the top excited when I realized I could actually do pistols unassisted.

Favorite workout or lift?

Any workout involving double unders is a go to for me. Tabata double unders was a recent fave for sure. Although I’m still working on my lifts, I’m a fan of anything involving a barbell and look forward to weight lifting club so I can improve my form and hopefully hit some new PRs. I’m also a big fan of any type of squats, including wallballs and slam balls, and always tabata squats.

Anything else you would like to share please feel free

Huge thanks to Adam and Kristin and all the amazing coaches for making Crossfit Sudbury an awesome place to be! I really cannot say enough about our coaches, who have all helped me improve both my confidence and my skills in big ways over the past nine months. I have never been part of such an encouraging and non-judgemental atmosphere, and I can say without exaggeration that I have never felt so immediately comfortable with a group of people as I did when I joined Crossfit Sudbury. You guys all make my day every day I make it in.
