CrossFitter of the Month – November 2012

Hey Folks!

Wow is it ever late, but I suppose better late than never?  Anyway, after way too much deliberation about who should be chosen for CFOTM, and then life got a little busy.  I’ll try not to let it happen too many more times 😉

So, this person worked hard, provided help and created a great atmosphere in the gym since we opened the doors until just recently.  We were constantly pushed to work harder, and perform better when he was around.  I’m speaking to none other than Mike Standon.

Here is a little bit of what he had to say to the usual gamut of questions:

Name: Mike Standon

Age: 29

Occupation: Financial Advisor

What was your exercise experience prior to crossfit?  Lots of sports: Junior A Hockey, baseball, competitive rowing.  Since I was about 16 or 17 I’ve always worked out at a gym as well.

How long have you been doing crossfit and why do you choose to crossfit? Actually about 3.5 years now!  I started at a “globo-gym” doing CrossFit on my own for about a year, then joined a box in Calgary and haven’t looked back since.  Once I realized that I didn’t need to “get huge” like all guys try to do at the gym, I decided to try CrossFit because it was a very efficient way of staying in shape.  Over the years it has become just as much about the friends and the community as it has staying in shape.

What is your favorite part about crossfit? The camaraderie for sure!

What are the accomplishments you are proud of? (Crossfit or non crossfit related) This is a tough one… I think people who are drawn to CrossFit are people who are naturally very competitive and will work hard to achieve their goals.  I count myself amongst this group, so I tend to view accomplishments in life as just simply what I want to get done.

Favorite workout or lift? Favourite lift, probably clean and jerk, and my favourite wods are any 20 to 30 minute AMRAPs (long hero wods are always a good time too!).

Anything  else you would like to share please feel free    Even though I’ve now moved back to Calgary, I have nothing but fond memories from CrossFit Sudbury.  It was great to have been part of the community since the very beginning, and to see the box grow and to watch so many people change their lives.  I’m sure I’ll be back here and there to pop in for a wod or two, so everybody watch out!  I’ll always push to set the time of the day

  1. Everyone’s fighting over your spot on the rack now. I got to use it last night. It’s not that the spot is that great. I think everyone just wants to be like you! Way to raise the bar!
